How Does Your Garden Grow? Indoors!

There's something about winter that lends itself to being food-centric. Between the holidays and cold weather hibernation mode, we're finding ourselves spending an awful lot of time in the kitchen lately.

Luckily, comfort food doesn't have to be boring. It might be too cold to grow anything outside, but you can bring an incredible bounty inside with Urban Agriculture's grow kits! We're not the only ones who love Urban Agriculture - they scored a spot on Oprah's Favorite Things list in 2016 and won the 2017 Startup Of The Year Stevie Award (the world's premier business award).

A few years ago, Los Angeles resident Chad Corzine set out to start an organic garden on his apartment balcony. He soon found himself frustrated by the process (and the mess!). After searching the internet for people going and growing through the same issues - and coming up empty - he created the Urban Agriculture Company. Starting in a 6’x6’ closet in January 2016, today Urban Agriculture operates in a 4,000 square-foot warehouse with 25 full-time employees.

"We may think we are nurturing our garden, but of course it's our garden that is really nurturing us."

- Jenny Uglow

Urban Agriculture's grow kits contain everything you need to grow something good (and good for you!) in one package. Both the seeds and soil are certified organic by the Organic Materials Review Institute, and the containers are made from 100% recycled tea bags. All you need to provide is some sunshine and water!

Urban Agriculture Basil grow kit

How do we love thee, basil? Let us count the ways! This deliciously aromatic herb is the perfect complement to tomato-based dishes, with its minty yet sweet flavor counteracting the acidity of nightshade veggies. The fresh flavor of basil shouldn't be limited to red sauce, however - it's a fantastic addition to desserts, drinks, and even ice cream!

Fun fact: In many cultures, basil is considered a symbol of love. Tuck a sprig behind your ear (from Italy) or carry basil in your pockets (from Mexico) this Valentine's Day!

Urban Agriculture Cilantro grow kit

Cilantro, also known as coriander, has a uniquely bright, almost lemony flavor. It's a staple in Indian, Mexican, and Thai cuisine - if you like chutney, guacamole, and noodle soups, chances are you're a cilantro fan.

Cilantro has been used for millennia. Hippocrates used it in medicines (its leaves pack a powerful punch of Vitamins A, C, and K!) and it was a common ingredient in ancient Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Middle Age-era love potions. (Did we mention Valentine's Day will be here before you know it?!)

Urban Agriculture Mint grow kit

The unmistakable scent and flavor of mint make it one of the most loved herbs. Not just for mojitos, mint elevates a wide variety of recipes from chicken to cookies.

Mint is also a heavy lifter in the health department. It helps alleviate hiccups and indigestion, and the essential oils in the leaves aid in clearing up congestion. (There's a reason cold medicines often taste minty!)

One more benefit? Mint just might be nature's best breath freshener!
